Spokane Wildlife Education: Do Possums Attack Cats, Dogs, Or Other Pets?

Possums, also known as opossums, sometimes face a lot of rumors and misinformation. One of the most common rumors is that possums will attack pets such as dogs and cats. In most cases, this is not the case. There are, however, some exceptions.



When They Attack
Most of the time, possums are very docile animals that are non-aggressive and will simply stay out of your way. This makes them unlikely to attack pets like your dog or cat and equally unlikely to attack humans. Like any animal, however, possums will become aggressive if they are threatened or agitated.

Generally speaking, possums will go out of their way to avoid conflict, including not attacking pets or people. They will try to get out of the situation if they can and may even “play possum”, the well-known defense mechanism where these animals pretend they are dead in hopes that their predator will leave them alone. They may also give you a warning sign, such as showing its teeth. If they feel no other option, a possum may bite or scratch your pet.

Could They Do Damage?
If a possum decides that your dog or cat has threatened it and chooses to attack, then they can cause some serious injuries. Possums are similar in size to the average cat and they have sharp claws along with 50 teeth that are razor sharp. As such, they could potentially hurt your pet. Keep in mind, however, that your pet has its own claws and teeth and in the case of cats, the claws are sharper than those of possums.

Other Risks To Pets
While possums are unlikely to physically attack your pet, they can hurt them in other ways, specifically diseases. Possums may carry pests such as mites, ticks, and fleas, which in turn can carry disease or simply cause a serious annoyance to your pet. Some possums may also carry toxoplasmosis, which cats can easily develop. This may transmitted by urine or contaminated soil or water.

How To Avoid Problems
If you are concerned about a possum attack your cat, dog, or other pet or even just transmitting a disease to your beloved animal, the best solution is to keep your pet inside. Only let them outside with supervision so you will be there to prevent any interactions with possums. You can also discourage possums from staying on your property by cleaning up pet food and other potential food sources.
